Week two EDLD 5301 RESEARCH:

I was able to use the Dana text and videos to learn about how action research could impact a lot of different areas in a school setting. This also helped me narrow down a topic that I am interested in gaining more insight on. I was fortunate to be able to meet with both my superintendent and my principal to discuss and gain input on my proposed research project. We came to the conclusion that we would like to understand what “we” (our school district) could do to help increase our economically disadvantaged students STAAR results. My plan is to focus specifically on incoming 6th grade student’s math and reading scores.

I look forward toward my research on this topic. I feel like it may be challenging, but my administrators were encouraging and offered support towards completion of this project. I am lucky to work for these types of leaders!!! Also during my reading in the Dana text, I came across a section of how Marion McCray used inquiry to find solutions to increase her lower quartile of students in exam scores. Most of these kids also fall into sub-population group I will be focusing on.

If you have any interventions that seem to be working for your respective school districts please let me know. This may work at ours as well. Also, if you could recommend any websites, articles, or other projects similar to mine it would be greatly appreciated.

Proposed Action Research Plan: How to improve the 6th grade economically disadvantaged students STAAR results in Math and Reading?

Any comments to evolve this plan would be great!!!

This is a good area to look at. Have you thought about what specifically you want to examine? Are there certain interventions that work well at other schools with similar demographics that you can use? Just a thought. Good Luck!!

  2. Math and reading always seem to be an area of concern. I am also focusing my action plan on math and reading scores (DRA & DMA) I am interested to follow your plan and see how everything unfolds. I am with Liegh Ann. Do you have any interventions or strategies in mind? Are there some that work better than others? If so, why do you think so.

  3. This will be a challenging project especially in the two subject areas. You might consider how you will be able to know what is working and what is not. Being able to meet with your district leadership already is awesome. It looks like you have already started the research process. My project is similar, but I will only be working on strategies to improve academic vocabulary to gauge student success.

  4. You could do something like implement after school tutorials, pull-outs during class time to where another teacher or para are working with each student one on one, maybe even phone calls home to see if there is anything the school can do (like the principal from Rancho Isabella Elementary suggested). You also may just want to focus on math or reading. You could also do mock tests to see if there is any improvement from the beginning of your project, middle and end. The STAAR test hit us all hard! We are all looking for solutions to fix our scores in my district.
